October Meetup – Recreating Reality
October 25, 2018 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Rhode Island Virtual Reality’s October Meetup will feature Computer Vision Engineer Scott Sorensen from Vision Systems (visionsystemsinc.com).
Reality capture technologies and photogrammetry allow for the virtualization of real objects and environments. Computer Vision lies at the core of these technologies, and in this talk we will explore different techniques for 3D reconstruction, as well as different camera and sensor systems. These topics are motivated using the example of polar science, where camera systems are being used to assist scientists, measure key ecological parameters and help protect marine mammals.
Dr. Sorensen’s PhD work at University of Delaware was not typical for a Computer Science student. He built multiple 3D camera systems for use in polar regions and took part in 5 research expeditions to the Arctic and months on end at sea. His major areas of study included image based 3D reconstruction, thermal imaging and virtual reality application development. As part of his thesis work Scott was involved with the development and deployment of 3D camera systems in polar environments and participated in multiple field expeditions to the Arctic. He has published in a diverse set of computer vision topics, including material classification, 3D reconstruction, biomedical figure classification, and virtual reality visualization of scientific data. His current work includes the use of satellite imagery for 3D reconstruction and high level understanding.
